Why SASAL?
Having explored alternative assessment approaches, Happy Fish had always wanted to work with SASAL, a group of eminent and dedicated fisheries and marine scientists.
Some of the qualities that set SASAL Science and Scientists apart, make it such a compelling proposition for Happy Fish:
- An uncompromising scientific independence and rigour has created a new benchmark for sustainability assessments regarded by many as the gold standard.
- The assessments are designed for Australia’s unique and diverse marine and freshwater environments and small-scale fishers and farmers, with seafood assessed at the local fishery and individual fisher-producer level for greater accuracy.
- A common set of values between the organisations is our love for the ocean and freshwater environments.
- The goodwill and passion for the environment that overrides business as usual, with scientists committing their time and expertise without recompense.
For Happy Fish, this is more than sustainability, this is about regenerative fishing. The assessment criteria and process are uncompromising in their commitment to improving the health of marine and freshwater environments, leaving each fishery in a better place than it was found.
